Benelli Serial Number Lookup
A liitle more info would help. For example The Standard Catalog of Firearms.under the benelli banner list some 9 didfferent Benelli's bearin g hte model designation of 'M-1' but there is no given DOM information.even with a serial number maybe at www.benelliusa.com.
My H&K/Benelli SBE which I bought in early 1992 has a U0025XX 4 digit serial number If memory serves me correctly, the Comfortech™ stock also started with the SBEII, which wasn't available until late 2004, early 2005. The serial number does NOT contain the date of manufacture on a Benelli (or any Italian-made firearm). You need to look for some 'proof-markings,' likely along the left side of the barrel beneath. HK never made M1 Super 90's, they are Benelli's imported by HK prior to the 89 ban. If it is an HK import it is a Pre-Ban gun and doesn't require the 922r parts in order to have an extension tube. I sold one for $750 a few years ago, new in the box and now to this day, wish I could travel back in time and choke myself.
TheBenelli Shotgun Disaster

I have worked on this barrel and hashelped it but good steel has a memory when it gets hot it migratesback. I would love to hear some good advice from you on how to fix this$1700 mistake !!!”
Hello Jim,
There is no easy answer tothis. “Benelli” is one of those brands that people seem to get really riledabout. If you say you love a Benelli, half of the more ornery folksclaim they hate you. If you say something that isn't flattering, theother half seems to lose their collective minds as well . . .particularly if they own one, as if merely owning something somehow makesit better or worse than it really is.
Accordingto Benelli, the original “Super Black Eagles” often had a problemshooting unacceptably low, well below point of aim. Well, apparentlysome nameless Italian engineer “fixed it.” Benelli has a problem withmost of their guns, including the M2, according to Benelli USA. Here is a direct quote fromBenelli USA: “Iwill tell you up front that you will not find an M2 that shoots a 50/50pattern. The M2 is designed to be shot with the target floatingjust above the front bead for better visibility and the rib is raisedat the rear to give a 60/40 to 70/30 pattern. “
So, Jim, it is a big hot mess.Over the years I've tested and evaluated countless Benelli models, numerous other brands made at the Benelli plant (Franchi)and the patterning results I've obtained are all extremely well-documented notjust with piles of patterning sheets, but on video as well. Until theunfortunate SBE3, Benelli product has not had severe, egregious pointof impact issues. In fact, at a laser-verified 40 yards, my BenelliVinci prints no more than 1.02 inches high:https://youtu.be/4lLkh7NP5ig. My M2 shoots to point of aim at 40 yards and so did my SBE2 for thatmatter. One can speculate that the only 20 shotguns Benelli ever madethat shoot to point of aim at 40 yards were sent to me, but the chancesof that are slim to none, and Slim just left town.
A 60/40 pattern is 3 inches high, a 70/30 pattern is 6 inches highat 40 yards.
ThisBenelli test target is 'within parameters' according to Benelli. It isessentially a 100 / 0 pattern at just 21 yards, with almost all of thepellets hitting above the point of aim Benelli marked in red. WhileBenelli USA claimed this was acceptable and returned the shotgun to thehapless customer . . . this is totally unacceptable for any huntingshotgun, anywhere, made by anyone.
Now,Benelli's 'new' bizarre standards (if you want to call them that) are 0 -6 inches high at 21 yards, within 4 inches of the bull horizontally, also at 21 yards. You can call that type of attempt at a tolerancewhat you wish: I just have to call it a nasty mess, if not a tragicembarrassment. No one at Benelli can explain where the 21 yards camefrom in the first place: no one uses that for a 12 gauge, and whywould they? Industry standards are 40 yards, and all shotguns unlessotherwise specified should shoot to point of aim.
I'mnot a “barrel bender” by any means, my friend Tony Knight was, however. According to Benelli, they have tried the “barrel bending”routine on their current “Crio” barrels and it doesn't work. Thefolks at Benelli USA will do what they can, they can change barrelsfor you and perhaps improve things. But, Benelli USA has no controlover what drops out of a machine in Urbino, Italy, and there is nofix and none planned . . . at least, according to Benelli USA.
Itmay not make you feel any better, but you aren't alone. Another Jim,from Wisconsin, wrote:
“Ijust read your excellent review of SBE 2 and 3 problems with shootinghigh. I pheasant in SD every year and have shot many pheasantsin my 57 years of hunting. This last year was much different.
Ibought and hunted with a m2 and was very excited about the hunt. Unfortunately, I missed 25 to 30 pheasants. I questioned myabilities as I'm getting up in age but my friend told me to patternmy gun. What a surprise! It was shooting ridiculouslyhigh, 95% above aim point. I sent it to Benelli and theyadjusted it and sent it back the test pattern paper. Totaldisappointment. 95% of the shot was above their point of aim. I love this gun but it's totally useless and a huge fraud! Doyou have any suggestions for me? Can you recommend a lightweight auto that shoots 50/50? Regardless of what happens I want tothank you for your incredible review of this problem and sharing it.“
Jimlater added,
“HiRandy
Yes,it is unreal. I actually have the pattern which proves the gunshoots 95/5! It was shot at 21 yds. The gunsmith said itis within 6's vertical and 2's horizontal specificationsafter his adjustment, which he didn't describe. I really wouldlike to discuss this with Benelli, at the highest level possible, anysuggestions? Also, are there any Benelli autos that shoot good?
Thanksagain.
Jim”
I'vespent far, far too much time patterning shotguns, but the ridiculous pointof impact problems with the SBE3 are a new development. In timespast, Benelli product has done quite well in extended comparisonswith other shotguns, as you can see herehttp://www.randywakeman.com/A400vsBrowningMaxusBenelliVinci.htmand here http://www.randywakeman.com/AnOldComparisonBenelliSBEIIvsBrowningMaxus.htm. As many know, my favorite 20 gauge pheasant gun for many years has been aBenelli M2 20 gauge with a 24 inch barrel, and it shoots to point ofaim at 40 yards.
TODAY
Theproblems with the SBE3's inability to throw a pattern where it ispointed is a miserable mess. I've had countless e-mails and phonecalls about it from angry SBE3 owners and you can be sure thatBenelli USA is well aware that most SBE3 owners who pattern theirguns are loudly unhappy. Whatever they are doing over at Benelli inItaly, is sure isn't good.
Thefolks at Benelli USA will do what they can. Currently, the toptechnical person at Benelli USA will ask for your serial number andwill look up the work order to see what was done to it when itwas there. Then he will give you a call after that and see whatthey can do to take care of it for you. That's all there is at themoment, Jim. Hopefully Benelli USA can improve things to the pointwith your SBE3 that you can live with. A couple of folks have reportedthat, after two or three returns to Benelli with no progress, BenelliUSA finally gave them a refund on what can only be described ashorribly defective shotguns.
Icannot possibly recommend a SBE3 (and will not) until such time as Benelli decidesto get their act together and rectifies this common, serious problemat the plant level. No honest person could. $1800 is far too much to pay to join the “GangThat Couldn't Shoot Straight,” but so is $500 for that matter.
Thereis no indication whatsover that Benelli is going to change a thing, sosome will just save their pesos and wait for the SBE4 I suppose. All Ican dois put people in touch with the lead tech at Benelli that will do hisbestto try to help, as I've done for you. I hope it works out for you,Jim.

Our Assessment: The Benelli M1 Super 90 sprang forth from the Heckler & Koch 512, which incorporated Benelli’s inertia recoil system; the 512 had a ‘man cutter’ choke which could pattern projectiles into stripes, aptly named for its ability to chop through anything it wanted. Fast forward a few years and you have the M1 Super 90, a famous shotgun, used by professional 3-gun shooters on tactical courses, all the way to competitive sporting clay champions; the inertia system is extremely smooth with minimal maintenance and reduction of recoil as positive attributes. This is a 1989 Super 90 with fixed rifle style sights, a nice matte black finish and 7 shot tube capacity; HK imported M1 Super 90’s can be ‘ghost loaded’ with one in the chamber, another right behind it in the receiver and then whatever you have in the tube. We believe its high condition is enough to label this early HK import ‘collectible’, as the M series is still going strong with its track record, it has gained attention through modern video games and movies, so if you keep it in this condition, you will have invested wisely. If you want the ultimate semi-auto scatter gun for home defense or duty carry, this one will perform reliably and is a little lighter than the 1100 with an alloy receiver. It is well balanced and some of the punch from buckshot or slug shells will be reduced with the rotating bolt face and inertia system.
